"The elephant at the zoo sat on its keeper." --Ed

Gosh darn my kids are cute.

***********************************

At soccer practice today, my assistant coach yelled at one of the girls and she burst into tears.

This is the problem with coaching girls' sports. No boy is ever going to burst into tears on the field unless a) the team wins the state championship or b) the team loses the state championship.

I like the fact that the girls cry when they're upset or frustrated. I do it all the time. I like the fact that they're sensitive. I don't want to tell them "Buck it up, kiddo, you have to develop tougher skin!"

It's just a freaking game. No one should get that upset.

I'm not saying that anyone should walk over anyone else, and I'm not saying that girls are weak. We're not. We're stronger that we're more trusting with how we allow people to see our vulnerabilities; we're more willing to put ourselves out there and let ourselves be hurt.

So Alyssa cried at practice today because someone yelled at her and made her feel bad. I'd forgotten how many times I felt like doing the same thing when I played, but felt even worse when I wanted to show how much it hurt my feelings.

This is my last year coaching soccer.

I'm not sure I can do this anymore.
